The Girl in the Attic
Character Sketches....

who might you be?

Actors aged 8 - 14

Sara Crewe:

A resourceful young girl who is devoted to her father. Her mother died when she was

born and she and her father have faced the world together. She is anintelligent, and

imaginative character, always creating stories. She has an effect on anyone she meets.

Ermengarde:

School life has been hard for Ermengarde. She is often teased and bullied by a few of the girls and finds academic work difficult. She comes from a family who do not really care for her, and a father who is not interested in her because she is not clever. Her life becomes immeasurably better when she meets Sara and finds a loyal friend who believes in her.

Lavinia:

Beautiful, rich and spiteful, Lavinia is the school bully a real Mean Girl. Even though she is herself very wealthy, she is bitterly jealous of Sara's apparent wealth and position at the start of the play. She is very nasty, particularly to Becky and

Ermengarde and she is a terrible snob.

Becky:

Becky is the scullery maid at the school. She is a very sad character and is treated appallingly by Miss Minchin and Cook. She becomes Sara’s friend when Sara is reduced to poverty, and joins her in the attic. Becky speaks with a cockney accent.

Lottie:

A younger pupil and “mothered” by Sara. She is frightened of the other girls, but Sara helps her. Need to be able to cry... a lot!!

Beatrice/Alice/Isobel:

Three schoolgirls who are Sara's friends. They also act as narrators for some of the story.

Victoria/Jessie:

Together with Lavinia, their leader, they are The Mean Girls! They are often seen teasing the “weaker” students and take delight in Sara's downfall and are gleefully awful to her.

Janet:

The eldest of the Carmichael children. Very sensible and kind.

Nora/Sally/Jane & Donald:

Carmichael children who take pity on Sara when they see her as a poor scullery maid.

Anne:

A small but important part as a  beggar girl whom Sara rescues from starvation by buying her buns from the baker.  Speaks with a cockney accent

                      Adult Characters

                                          Miss Minchin:

The cruel and frightening Head Teacher of the Seminary for girls in London where

Sara becomes a pupil. She is deeply unpleasant, and has no sympathy for any of her students at

the Seminary. Her only motivation is life is to make money. She runs the Seminary with her

sister, Amelia. All the pupils are all frightened of her ... except for Sara.

Miss Amelia:

Very different from her sister, Amelia is kind hearted and tries to stop some of the cruelty; but she too is frightened of Miss M.

Monsieur Dufarge:

The French teacher, who is a kind man who is very impressed with Sara. Speaks with a French accent!

Mariette:

Sara’s French maid. She looks after Sara when she first moves into the Seminary. She has to leave when Sara becomes a scullery maid. Speaks with a French accent.

Mr Barrow:

Captain Crewe’s solicitor. Not a particularly nice man. He is very unsympathetic when giving the news of Sara’s poverty. Pompous, overbearing person.

Captain Crewe:

Sara’s father and a very loving man. It breaks his heart to leave Sara at the Seminary. He is a Captain but no longer serves in the army. He is a business man, but his investment fails.

Mr Carrisford:

Captain Crewe’s best friend who goes into business in India with Crewe, but the business apparently fails. He is deeply upset when Sara cannot be found and he becomes very ill. A very kind man.
